What To Bring

General Items

Bedding	Sheets, Duvet, Duvet Covers, Pillows, Pillow Cases etc.
Computer	Either a Desktop or Laptop Computer with a Network Card
- Case	The computer itself if it is a desktop or carry case for laptop
- Monitor	Necessary only for desktops
- Keyboard	Necessary only for desktops
- Mouse and Mouse Mat	For both Desktops and Laptops. Mouse Mat optional
- Speakers/Headphones	Something to let you listen to your computer
- Printer	Optional. The University Library has printers
- Cables	To connect and power all the different items
- Installation CD's/Drivers	Computers may play up. Be prepared to reinstall
- Consumables	Paper, CD's, Ink, Cases etc.
Mobile Phone & Charger	We do have pay phones but a mobile is more convenient
Portable Music Device	MP3 or CD Player. Useful for walks to lectures, shops and alike
Camera	Preferably digital. Incredibly useful to record your time at University
Batteries	Rechargeable (with charger) if possible - for use in the above
Extension Lead	Rooms have two sockets, so this is probably an essential
Books	Informational and Recreational
DVDs	Additional entertainment
Fan	Recommended for the Summer
Alarm Clock	To get up for breakfast and 9am lectures
Wallet/Purse	For money, University ID etc.
Official Paperwork	Official stuff you've been sent (e.g. University, Student Loan etc.)
Cheque Book	For paying hall and JCR fees etc.
Passport Photographs	Used on your NUS card etc.
Rucksack	For moving books to and from lectures
Toiletries	Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Soap, Shower Gel etc.
Medicine's	Plasters, Headache Tablets, Hay Fever Tablets etc.
Washing Basket/Bag	Suitable for storing and taking dirty clothes to the laundry
Washing Powder	Or something similar for washing your clothes and bedding
Personal Touches	Things to make you feel at home (e.g. Photos, Ornaments, Posters etc.)

 

 

Stationary

Pens and Pencils	To write and draw with
Eraser & Correction Fluid	To fix mistakes
Sharpener	For the pencils
Scissors	Not absolutely necessary but recommended
Post-It Notes	Good for reminders
Calculator	Optional - depends on how many calculations you are likely to do
Lined Paper/Notebook	For making notes in lectures
Ring Binders	For storing lecture notes in
Hole Punch	For storing notes
Stapler and Staples	Recommended for sorting paperwork
Drawing Pins	For the notice board in rooms. Poster sales are usually held in the first week

 

 

Clothing

Standard Stuff	Everyday clothes
Dressing Gown	Also useful if there is a fire drill
Formal Wear	Many events require formal wear to attend
Coat	For when it rains and gets cold

 

 

Food & Drink - Fully Catered

Cutlery	Knives, Forks and Spoons (at least 2 of each)
Crockery	Plates, Bowls, Mugs, Glasses etc. (at least 2 of each)
Cooking Utensils	For cooking weekend evening meals with
Pots and Pans	Just enough for weekend evenings. Pot, Frying Pan etc.
Measuring Equipment	Jug, Scales etc. if you can cook
Washing Up Stuff	Cloth, Washing Up Liquid etc.
Some Food & Drink	Enough to get you started. Remember - you won't have a freezer

 

 

Food & Drink - Self Catered

Cutlery	Knives, Forks and Spoons (at least 2 of each)
Crockery	Plates, Bowls, Mugs, Glasses etc. (at least 2 of each)
Cooking Utensils	Spatula, Wooden Spoon, Ladle, Sharp Knife, Cheese Grater etc.
Pots, Pans and Trays	Large Pot, Small Pot (probably 2), Frying Pan, Baking Tray etc.
Measuring Equipment	Jug, Scales etc.
Washing Up Stuff	Cloth, Washing Up Liquid etc.
Some Food & Drink	As much as you can manage. You will also have a freezer

 

 

Definitely Don't Bring

Candles	Open flames are not permitted in hall
Hot Items	Things that generate a lot of heat (e.g. Lava lamps, Rice cookers etc.)
Heavy/Bulky Items	Most rooms aren't on the ground floor. Carrying items upstairs isn't fun
Furniture	Rooms really aren't big enough for additional furniture
Pets (All Kinds)	Please respect rules on health and safety
Drying Rack	Drip drying is not permitted in student bedrooms
Fridges	Not permitted for health and safety reasons. Provided in kitchens
Kettles	Provided in kitchens. Will not work in student bedrooms as they will simply blow the room fuse
Other Kitchen Electricals	Most electrical kitchen items that are not provided by the hall are not permitted. Rice cookers, as mentioned above, are not permitted
Weapons	We would like to promote peace and as such, wepons of any description are not welcome

 

 

Recommended Against Bringing

Television	Much of the hall has very poor signal. If you do decide to bring your own television, don't forget you'll need a TV license. Also bear in mind that the JCR has various televisions set up for use by its members
Non-Tumble Dryable Clothes	We do have an airing room if there are items you desperately want to bring. However, for convenience, we recommend using the tumble dryers
Cars	A burden, particularly in the first year. There is limited parking which will incur an additional charge. Walking to places such as town is more sociable. Remember, you can't drink and drive either
