JCR Information

What is the JCR?

The Junior Common Room (JCR) is a society that operates within the Hall. It is the officially recognised representative body for students within the Hall and members of its Committee meet regularly with the Warden, Hall Manager and Caterer to discuss student issues.

Through its Committee, the JCR provides for the welfare of its members. Representatives from the Committee meet with the Vice President for Rights & Diversity at the Students' Union and it is common for members of the Committee to sit on working groups convened by the University or by the Union to address student welfare concerns. The Warden regularly consults the JCR Committee on matters relating to student welfare as part of his pastoral duties. The Welfare Officers receive training from the Students' Union and are always happy to listen to students that are in need of someone to talk to and to see that they get the help that they need.

In addition to its representative and welfare functions, the JCR provides most of the amenities and social facilities in Hall including the newspapers, televisions, table tennis room, snooker room and bar sports. Sports equipment, including two football goals, is also available to JCR members. The JCR also funds and, through the Sports Officer, manages a range of teams entered for the Inter-mural sports championships.

The JCR holds regular events including film nights and bar quizzes, darts and pool tournaments. Throughout the year the JCR also organises much larger events including the major formals (The Snow Ball in the Winter Term and Casino Night in the Spring Term) and the Summer Informal and Barbecue.

Membership is open to all student residents in Hall by payment of the annual fee and it is routine for all students to join. Attached membership is also available to students not resident in Hall by payment of a reduced membership fee.
